Welcome Message from APSF

Daniel J. Cole, M.D.
President, Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation

On behalf of the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation (APSF), I wish to extend a warm welcome to each of you. It has been an honour to work with our Malaysian colleagues to plan this meeting.

This meeting aligns with our purpose as healthcare professionals…which is to promote the well-being of our patients through the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of disease. We have a rich heritage in patient safety, but harmful adverse events still occur at an unacceptable rate.

Patient safety is a global concern and there is a significant need for worldwide anesthesia professional collaboration. We learn from each other, share best practices, promote global standards, and ultimately improve the safety and quality of care for patients everywhere.

The APSF is honored to be a part of this historic second APSS in collaboration with the Malaysian Society of Neuroanaesthesiology and Neurocritical Care (MSNACC), The Association of Staffs in Anaesthesiology of Sarawak General Hospital, International Society for the Perioperative Care of Patients with Obesity (ISPCOP), Society for Obesity and Bariatric Anaesthesia (SOBA), UK, Society for Neuroscience in Anesthesiology and Critical Care (SNACC), the Singapore Society of Anaesthesiologists (SSA), and the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) to help create an innovative educational experience over the three-day conference duration.

It is my pleasure and honor to participate and help organize this novel combined Anaesthesia Patient Safety Symposium (APSS) & Regional Obesity & Bariatric Anaesthesia Conference (ROBAC) conference in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia. After a successful inaugural APSS in 2023 with over 1000 virtual participants from 48 different countries, the organizers felt energized to create an in-person safety conference combined with the Regional Obesity & Bariatric Anaesthesia Conference. The APSF is proud to join the Malaysian Society of Neuroanaesthesiology and Neurocritical Care (MSNACC), Persatuan Kakitangan Anestesiologi Hospital Umum Sarawak (PEKA-HUS), The Association of Staffs in Anaesthesiology of Sarawak General Hospital, International Society for the Perioperative Care of Patients with Obesity (ISPCOP), Society for Obesity and Bariatric Anaesthesia (SOBA), UK, Society for Neuroscience in Anesthesiology and Critical Care (SNACC), the Singapore Society of Anaesthesiologists (SSA), and the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) to provide an exhilarating educational experience over the three day conference duration.

Two primary goals of the APSF are to promote the national and international exchange of ideas and to provide the APSF Newsletter to all anesthesia professionals free of charge. The APSF Newsletter is now translated in eight different languages and read in over 224 countries worldwide. Participants of this meeting will have the opportunity to listen to and exchange ideas with global safety experts focusing on topics related to neuroanesthesia and neurocritical care. Topics such as non-operating anesthesia safety, safe patient positioning during neurosurgery, and safe transport of patients with brain injury are a few of the highlighted topics that will be discussed. APSF’s vision that “no one shall be harmed by anesthesia care,” may be achieved partly as a result of this multiorganizational and multiprofessional inclusive international safety conference. We are confident that this meeting will be a worthwhile experience for all of our participants and welcome the exchange of ideas to improve our patients’ and clinicians’ well-being.
